A Curved 49-Inch Monitor with FreeSync 2

June 2024 · 2 minute read

Being one of the leading suppliers of monitors for gamers, Acer has not had a single ultra-large, ultra-wide display for gamers. Until now. This week the company finally started to sell its EI491CR, a 49-inch curved monitor that supports AMD’s FreeSync 2 technology.

The Acer EI491CR uses a curved 8-bit VA panel featuring a 3840 × 1080 resolution, 400 nits maximum brightness, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, a 4 ms response time, 178º/178º vertical/horizontal viewing angles, and a 144 Hz refresh rate (overclocked from 120 Hz). The LCD can display 16.7 million colors and covers 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

The key selling feature of the EI491CR besides its diagonal is support for AMD’s FreeSync 2 variable refresh rate technology with Low Framerate Compensation that also allows applications to tone map directly to a monitor's native dynamic range thus improving rendering quality and performance in HDR mode. Meanwhile, it is unclear whether the LCD supports industry-standard HDR10 transport and how good HDR experience will be given that the maximum brightness supported by the display is 400 nits.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the EI491CR features one DisplayPort 1.2, one HDMI 2.0, and one HDMI 1.4 input. The monitor does not have a USB hub, yet it has two integrated 3 W speakers.
