Chicken Wings In Air Fryer

Appetizers are one of my all time favorite foods to make in my air fryer. I love that it essentially forces “batch cooking” which ensures that hot and flavorful appetizers are coming out of my kitchen at regular intervals. I do all the work in advance, like making the seasoning blend for the chicken, and then when I’m ready, it’s just a matter of tossing them into the air fryer and letting it work it’s magic.

One of the things I love most about air fryer cooking is that you can easily check on the progress of your recipe by opening the basket (unlike with an instant pot). You’ll find that comes in really handy, especially when making air fryer chicken wings. Wings come in all sizes so depending on the size of your wings, you may want to adjust the cooking time slightly.

The barbecue sauce in this recipe is totally optional. I love a sticky, saucy wing so that’s how I made this batch. Use your favorite barbecue sauce (any flavor works!) or make your own. Should you choose to omit the barbecue sauce, you will need to flip the wings and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

This easy recipe is a go-to for game day but we also enjoy these wings for dinner! They take less than 5 minutes to prep and under 20 minutes to cook. Perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, these wings are sure to impress.

  • Prepare. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F if your air fryer needs preheating. Cut the wings into drumettes and flats if necessary and pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Season. Toss the chicken wings with oil until coated. Mix together the brown sugar (if using), salt, pepper, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and cayenne pepper (if using). Sprinkle the mixture over the chicken wings and toss to evenly coat.
  • Fry. Spray the basket of the air fryer with nonstick cooking spray. Place a single layer of wings in the basket. Cook for 8-9 minutes, flip the wings, and continue cooking for an additional 5-7 minutes or until crispy.
  • Sauce. Remove the wings from the air fryer and brush BBQ sauce onto each piece. Return the wings to the air fryer and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes or until an inserted thermometer reads 165°F in the thickest part of the chicken.
  • Enjoy. Serve the hot wings with celery, blue cheese dressing, additional BBQ sauce, or ranch dressing (optional).
  • The BEST Air Fryer Chicken Wings

When making this chicken wings air fryer recipe, it’s a good idea to check on them occasionally to make sure they are cooking evenly and to prevent over cooking or possibly burning. I find that using a meat thermometer is helpful in ensuring that the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F. Additionally, it’s important to let the chicken rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute. This simple step will result in the best air fryer chicken wings that are juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. Enjoy!
