Critics Choice Awards 2024: Ryan Gosling's face crack, the Barbenheimer rematch, best moments, and a

June 2024 · 11 minute read

Barbie is this year's most nominated film, with The Morning Show leading the TV categories

The 29th Critics Choice Awards continued to roll the ball on 2024's awards season, honoring the best of film and television this past year, which has been one of the most dynamic in recent memory. And it only stoked the fire for this year's most hotly contested race – vs .

In the film categories, led with a record-breaking 18 nominations, followed by and with 13 each. Chelsea Handler was on hand to host the show for the second year in a row, delivering an array of jokes that seemed to land much better than Jo Koy's at the Golden Globes last Sunday.

In TV land, led with six nods, followed by Succession with five, and a slew of shows like , and more with four nods each.  and each took home four trophies, followed by with three.

The mania continues

The race between two of the year's biggest releases seemed to pick a side when Christopher Nolan's epic swept the Globes and Greta Gerwig's feminist fantasy only walked away with two trophies.

However, the critics preferred an even split, and while still walked away with the most trophies of the night, eight, was right on its tail, with six, including a majority of the technical wins. The only other film to come close was , with three wins.

Robert Downey Jr. takes down the critics

In his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor, Robert Downey Jr. found the opportunity to lambast the very people who voted for his win – the critics.

The actor found his shot to criticize some of their more hypocritical evaluations of his work, reading out reviews with sentences like "Pee Wee Herman, emerging from a coma" and "amusing as a bed-locked fart," which left the audience in stitches.

Ryan Gosling is left in shock

Many expected either Dua Lipa or Billie Eilish to walk away with the Best Song trophy for their contributions, but when himbo anthem "I'm Just Ken" prevailed instead, no one was more surprised than Ken himself, Ryan Gosling.

The camera immediately panned to a stunned Ryan, who seemed skeptical of the win. In fact, even though his name was announced as one of the winners, he chose not to take to the stage, with songwriters and producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt accepting.

America Ferrera's impassioned moment

Margot Robbie presented her co-star America Ferrera with the #SeeHer Award for her work in pushing the boundaries of how women are seen and represented in film and TV.

The moment created a powerful few minutes that the actress used to speak about representation in mainstream media, for Latina women and beyond. "Black, brown, indigenous, Asian, trans, disabled, any body type, any gender, we are all worthy of having our lives richly and authentically reflected."

Harrison Ford is left emotional

Screen legend Harrison Ford was presented with the Career Achievement Award for his decades of work in the industry, and delivered a short but grateful speech.

The largely stoic actor showcased a softer side with his dedication to his fans, all those who'd supported him throughout his career, and his wife Calista Flockhart, which you can see more of here.
