Marjorie Irene , a tap dance instructor who ran the Marjorie Marshall Dance School, and Anthony “Tony” Masciarelli, later Anthony Wallace Marshall, an industrial film director and later a producer, welcomed Carole Penny Marshall into the world on October 15, 1943, in the Bronx, New York City.

She has a sister, television producer Ronny Hallin, and a brother, actor/director/TV producer Garry Marshall.

Because Carole Lombard was her mother’s preferred actress, Penny was given the name Carole at birth.

Her mother picked the middle name for her in an effort to comfort her older sister Ronny, who was accumulating money in order to buy a horse.

When Marshall was a college student, he met football great Michael Henry, and at the age of 20, he quit his studies to marry him in 1963.

On April 10, 1971, Marshall wed actor-director Rob Reiner; Rob Reiner later adopted Tracy. She and Reiner got divorced in 1981. Five children were born to the couple.

Marshall had a brief relationship with singer Art Garfunkel in the middle of the 1980s, and he credits her assistance in helping him overcome his depression to that relationship.
