Zia Mohyeddin was born to an Urdu-speaking family from Rohtak, East Punjab (now in Haryana), British India, in Lyallpur, now known as Faisalabad, which is now part of Pakistan.
His father, Khadim Mohyeddin, was a dramatist, lyricist, musicologist, mathematician, and member of several theater companies.
Zia spent his formative years in Lahore and Kasur. From 1953 to 1956, he received his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
He made his West End début in A Passage to India from 20 April to 3 December 1960 at the Comedy Theatre, which played for 302 performances, following stage appearances in Long Day’s Journey into Night and Julius Caesar.
The British-Pakistani actor appeared in both British and Pakistani movies. He became well-known for hosting the popular Zia Mohyeddin Show on Pakistani television from 1969 until 1973.
